Geography Spain or the Kingdom of Spain is a country in southwestern Europe with parts of territory in the Atlantic Ocean and across the Mediterranean Sea. However, it also has territory in Morocco, the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, islands off the coast of Morocco. All of this land area makes Spain the second largest country in Europe behind France. The southern and eastern coasts of Spain, from the fertile Andalusian plain up to the Pyrenees, are often swept by warm winds called sirocco winds. These winds originate in northern Africa and keep temperatures along the Mediterranean coast milder than the interior. With an area of 505,990 km2, Spain is the largest country in Southern Europe, the second-largest country in Western Europe and the European Union, and the fourth-largest country by area on the European continent. With a population exceeding 47.4 million, Spain is the sixth-most populous country in Europe, and the fourth-most populous country in the European Union. Spain's capital and largest city is Madrid. Spain has five official languages: Castilian Spanish Catalan Galician Basque Occitan |
